Fox family lookup request
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm from England therefore i don't have a subcription for US records.

I would like to trace the parents of WILLIAM HAYNES FOX (born circa 1850 in New York??). He married Anna / Beatrice Farrel. This information comes from the tree of one of my DNA matches on Ancestry. I believe the link is through one of William's parents. The mother is listed as Winifred McDermott but i don't know if this is correct and there is no source information.

Thanks,
Pendlelad

Are you able to contact the tree owner and ask where the information came from?
Might save you some time.

This looks like it could be the family in question.

In 1908 in Kane, Illinois a William J Fox got married, parents Wm Fox & Anna Farrell. In 1912 a Ruth Fox also got married in Kane, Illinois, parents Wm Fox & Anna Farrell.  Both siblings born in La Salle, IL.

This would William & Ruth in 1900 census living in La Salle, IL, with their two of their older siblings. Something must have happened to the parents prior to the 1900 census. Parents born New York,.

This would be the family in the 1880 census for La Salle, IL. with the two older siblings George & Cora from the 1900 census. Parents are William & Annie from NY. William was born 1850. Also listed is William's younger sister Martha, also born in New York.

Thankyou both for all that information. It is greatly appreciated and is what i was hoping for. As the DNA match i have is linked to my paternal Irish line, of which the two names are Ganley and McDermott. I will now start to try and link these McDermott's to mine!

Thanks again,

NY State Department of Health Death Index
Winnifred Fox
28 August 1889 in Chili, NY

buried St Pius Tenth Cemetery
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/139751278/winnefred-fox

------------
Winifred (McDermott) Fox's 2nd son's name turns out to be probably Kieran. On later records it is Karen, Kerin, and Keron. His headstone says Kerin.

so her known children are:
William Haynes, Kieran, Francis, Martha, John and Winifred.
The names might come from her side of the family, we hope.

If Haynes is a family name on her side, then this might be a clue:

On Griffith's Valuation, the surnames McDermott and Haynes only occur together in
Creggan Civil Parish, Armagh
Castlerahan Civil Parish, Cavan
St Ann, Shandon, Civil Parish, Cork City
St Peter Civil Parish, Cork City

https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/

-----------
There were other McDermotts in Monroe County at the time, a farmer Michael McD, born Ireland 1814, in Ogden, and a few families in Rochester.

----------
A lot of US records are free at familysearch.org. You just need to set up an account.

Thanks for confirming that information. I know that my 4x great grandmother Ellen Mcdermott was born in County Westmeath or possibly Roscommon.

I suppose I'll have to scour parish records for Winifred, Ellen and Michael born around the same time. Not going to be an easy task! I do have a feeling Haynes is on John's side but might be wrong.

Cheers,

There is always a possibility with immigrant Irish families in the US that the families either knew each other in Ireland or came from about the same place. When I first found this, I didn't think it would matter, since you were looking for McDermotts, but here it is, just in case it helps:

A tree for John Fox at ancestry says he was born in 1816 in West Meath, Ireland. (no Irish sources to back it up.) The tree says these are baptism records for a couple of his sisters, children of James Fox and Anne Duffy:

Mary Fox 15 September 1828 in Tubber Parish, Westmeath and Offaly, Ireland
Catharine Fox, 21 Nov 1834, Tubber Parish, Westmeath and Offaly, Ireland

link to tree:
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/14982611/person/110064543186/facts?_phsrc=TpU1720&_phstart=successSource

The home person in the tree looks like a great great granddaughter of John's sister Anna. Hopefully the "Westmeath" location came down in the family which, to me, would make it pretty reliable. But there is always the chance that the tree owner just found 4 children named John, Mary, Ann, and Catherine all born in the same place. Which is not hard to do. So, proceed with caution :).
