Have you found William and second wife Mary on the 1911 census? Would let you reconfirm approx birth year and birth place.

I agree with Forfarian that the signature on the 1867 birth entry is Ferguson.

Like others I cannot find the family in the 1871 Census. Not as unusual as you might think. For a variety of reasons people were missed out on census night.

Backtracking to Margaret Farquharson - wife of Peter/Patrick Clark(e) and mother of William -

1861 Census has her aged 13(?) living with her parents and siblings at Covenant Close, 162 High Street, Edinburgh, Registration District St. Giles. What was her address when she married Peter in 1870 at St. Patrick's RC Church in the Cowgate?

Looking at another possible birth for William Clark, if you discount the 1867 one,  there is a William Clark born in 1868 - Registration District St. Giles Ref 685/4 897 which you may like to take a look at on SP.

I've checked their residence when married in 1870 and Patrick is at #3 West Port and Margaret is at #18 West Port, Edinburgh, as their usual residence.  Says she is 22 yrs old.  which tallies with 1861 and marriage date.    Says she is a 'paper folder'.

I've looked at the birth 685/4 897 and John / Ann is mother and father.  So have discounted.

The address in 1851 census of 81 High Street, Chalmers Close is an amazing address to be at.  And then 162 High St, Covenants Close also seems to be quite prestigious.  Her father was a "baker" so thought perhaps he baked for the upper class?  Just a nice thought. Comfortable for them all.

Think I may have tracked William down in 1871 census as a 4 yr old living at 8 Gilmore Street, Newington as a "boarder".

Living with Jane Ramsay 47; Wilhelmia Ramsay 22; George Ramsay 20; Robert Ramsay 17; Alexander Hastings 70.

It's just a long shot; but Newington is where William's brother was born in 1872 at # 30 West Richmond Street, Newington.

What is the surname of the William you have found in 1871, Westee?

The surname on the 1871 Census is Clark but it states he was was born in Leith which is totally separate from Edinburgh however the place of birth could be wrong.

There is a William Morrison Clark born in 1866 in South Leith.

One thing I meant to ask you Westee is have you done a comparison between the signature on the 1867 birth you posted a snippet of and the signature on Margaret's marriage certificate?
