What is his marital status in 1939?

We can’t post info from that but you have seen it. That would give you a date to work from searching for a marriage.

Electoral registers were published after the war, you might find information there if you have addresses to search.

Hard to know which name he was living under. Sometimes he is Joseph, sometimes Robert. Could he marry under Robert Brierley, or would he have to use his birth name of Joseph Robert?

In England he can call himself whatever he likes as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes.  He would not have had to prove who he was at that time.

Hi I'm the granddaughter of Robert's sister Florence who he lived with in 1939. The probate record for 1974 when he passed away reflects that he went under Joseph Robert also Robert and john robert. Pretty sure he was single but if you order a copy of the probate it should say next of kin.

From "Find a Will"
Brierley. John Robert, otherwise Robert, otherwise Joseph, of 258 Ridgway Street East, Manchester, died on  15 August 1974. Administration granted  9 September. £2827.

You could apply for a copy of the Letters of Administration which might have been granted to a family member, or perhaps a firm of solicitors. Letters of Administration are issued when there is no valid will, or one not able to be executed. The estate is then distributed in accordance with criteria laid down in law.

It looks as if he did not leave a will. Letters of Administration could have been granted to a close family member, but equally possibly to a solicitor or bank legal department who might have been acting on behalf of his nearest and dearest.  L of A do not show who would have benefitted from the estate.
