Flash Player and Edge

I have just visited 'Lincs to the Past' and encountered problems when I tried to view parish registers. Web site told me that I needed Flash Player - something that I knew I had on my PC. I manually enabled Flash Player and as I was doing so, a pop up window appeared to inform me that Edge was not supporting Flash Player after December 2020. Yet again, Microsoft are letting down users. It looks like I will have to use Firefox to be able to use Flash Player when accessing 'Lincs to the Past' and similar sites.

It is frustrating.

It's the original creators of Flash, Adobe, that are behind it. They are not supporting it anymore so others have had to follow suit.

It makes things difficult for some websites like the one you mentioned, because they don't always have the resources to adapt their websites to cope.

I was about to post something similar:

I don't think anyone is going to support flash after the end of 2020, not even Adobe, but I don't remember all the specific details. Firefox on Windows 10 won't do it for me even now, but I might have some settings wrong. On Linux it seems to depend what version you use and what distribution.
There is a browser, Pale Moon, that hasn't refused to do flash yet. It is available for Windows as well as Linux. But if Adobe cuts support at the end of the year, it might not matter.

I have just sent an email to Lincolnshire Council to ask them what they are planning to do from January 2021. I will post their reply when / if I receive one.

Just had a response from Lincolnshire Archives :

''Many thanks for your email regarding the Lincs to the Past website. A new website to replace is being developed and is planned to go online by the end of the year.''

If I have understood correctly, Flash is being replaced by something called HTML5.

No idea how this is meant to work, not tech minded enough to know

HTML5 isn't a replacement for Flash.

However, any websites that use Flash for it's interactive nature could largely reproduce it with a combination of various standard technologies (eg HTML5 + javascript + SVG). But that would require a complete re-development of a Flash website, or Flash components, which isn't likely in many cases other than for things that really require it (eg online games).

So how are you meant to play games then?  What, if anything, is replacing Flash?
