Service return birth
« on: Friday 28 August 20 19:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering what a Service Return birth was on ScotlandsPeople?

A distant cousins has recently gotten results of her My Heritage dna test and she’s discovered two people who are siblings, the only issue is these two people have never been on any of our family trees and the results say they are her 1st-2ns cousins. Of course she knows her owns cousins and none of them have these two peoples names. When I went on ScotlandsPeople and looked for possible births I found two people with the same name in roughly the age group Heritage said they were but both are Service Return birth certificates but because of the years it’s inaccessible on the site. Just wondering what that meant because it doesn’t give a place of birth like Glasgow or Lanark etc just that. Her grandfather was in the forces and was a womaniser and I’m worried we’ve just uncovered something that was meant to be kept a secret hahaha

Regards

Gary

I’m not familiar with Scottish research, but I imagine it is the same as as Military overseas birth returns for England.

Hopefully someone will come up with the correct information.

both are Service Return birth certificates but because of the years it’s inaccessible on the site.

Births more recent than 100 years are available but you will have to purchase them as paper certificates, you can't view them on-line.

if they are "Service returns" I believe that would mean the births took place outside Scotland.

explained on the Gude to records on ScotlandsPeople
Births: Service records (from 1881)
Army returns (1881-1959) - births of Scottish persons at military stations abroad
Service Departments' registers (from 1 April 1959) - births outside the United Kingdom to persons ordinarily resident in Scotland who are serving in, or employed by, HM Forces

Thank you! I had thought it was Scottish kids born to parents that had been posted elsewhere, brings up more questions now haha

Thanks again
