Charles Joseph Leyland Tompkins
« on: Friday 28 August 20 20:43 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone.

I am looking for any help identifying the military uniform worn by the gentleman in this picture, he is Charles Joseph Leyland Tompkins & he was my Great Grandfather, the family were told he served in the Essex Regt and we assume that was during WW1 however we cannot find him in the 1901 census so not sure if he was serving at that time elsewhere.

I would also be interested to know your thoughts regarding what medals he is wearing & what they may be for.

We believe he was born in 1879 in Longton Stoke on Trent Staffordshire.

Thanks

Andrea.

The uniform is from his time in the King's Royal Rifle Corps.  There are Boer War medal records (Ancestry) for the name and number in the KRRC although the initial is w - could be an admin slip and as Jebber notes, he has the QSA medal, the three clasps are as the medal record.  Served in UK in the Great War.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
