Searching for Farrell family after 1911
« on: Saturday 29 August 20 07:21 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some assistance with locating members of this family please.

Some background:

1911 census
2 Crawford St, Greenock.
George Farrell head 50 widr bricklayer b Ayrshire, Saltcoats
Sarah Farrell sister 52 W
Peter son 16 S apprentice boat builder b Glasgow
Laurence son 13 b Renfrewshire, Greenock
Samuel son 4 b Greenock

George’s wife Maggie died in 1910.

There was an older son, George b 1890 who emigrated to Australia in 1910. I have information about his family and WW1 service. I also have the family in 1891 and 1901, plus some related of birth, death and marriage certificates.

It is specifically George snr and his sons that I am looking to track down after 1911. There are a few possible deaths and marriages on SP but I am hoping for some ideas or help on how to determine which, if any, might be the right people.

I considered that Peter might have joined up but I can’t see an exact match on Ancestry for a Peter Farrell serving in WW1.

Thanks for any help.  :)

Hi,

On Familysearch - a UK Merchant Seaman record (Military Service 1918 -21)  for a Lawrence Farrell born in 1897 Renfrewshire  -  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KC7R-TX5
Perhaps this could offer a direction to search for Laurence/Lawrence ?

Looby :)

There is another Samuel Farrell age 3(with father George) in Port Glasgow in 1911.
Don't think the Samuel in the last post is yours.

Thanks looby. I will have a look at that.  :)

Yes ev. Maggie’s maiden name was McVey (with spelling variations). I did see that death of the 80 year old with MMN McVey, but the middle names threw me. I do not have Peter’s b/c but it seems like I might need to get it.

Lawrence was 3 in 1901 and 13 in 1911, so born c 1898 though I do not have his b/c. I think I will have to do so to see if that burial matches up.  :)

The Valuation Roll find looks interesting, though I know there are other George Farrells around.

Thanks for your help - these give me a couple more avenues to explore.  :)

Result for Lawrence.  ;D

Looking at the Find a Grave image, I opted to buy the marriage certificate for this couple. Yes, he is the correct Lawrence. He was a seaman, lived at Ferry House, Ardnay, Arrochar.  ;) He married Elizabeth on 2 Dec 1919. Both of his parents are deceased.

That is very useful to narrow down George’s death between 1911 and Dec 1919.  :)

I have a distant cousin (William HANVEY), who on his marriage in Glasgow in 1918, has both parents deceased. His mother Agnes, though, died in 1922, and I haven't found a death for his father, who is not noted as deceased on Agnes' death.
