MARS an instution in Dorset
« on: Saturday 29 August 20 16:04 BST (UK) »
Hello all
When looking up Cuthbert Allison Bennett (birthplace Chesterfield, Derbyshire) in the 1911 census. He is aged 23 and single and residing in an Institution named "MARS" in Portland, Dorset.
Does any know what this is?

Thanks John

It wasn’t an institution - it was a ship.  Look at the occupations of the other people on the entries by using the back arrow.  Go back 2 pages and look at the heading

His Majesty's ship "Mars" 1st Class Twin Screw Barbette Battleship, Weymouth Bay. 3rd Division Home Fleet.
The first page of the Enumeration Book gives the details

Why Mars for the Royal Navy?

Mars was the God of war in Roman mythology.

The entry for Cuthbert Allister Bennett is on film strip 329 and the  first page of the Enumeration Book is on 325, so four pages before.
