MacDonald from Dunvegan, Skye Scotland & Haddington, Caithness.
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 06:22 BST (UK) »
I am looking to track the parents of a William Macdonald born approximately 1849 in Dunvegan ? , Skye, Scotland.

I have his wife's name - Isobella King and their children.  Isobella was supposed to be born in Shotts, Scotland.

Children are William Malcolm b 1878 Prestonkirk, Scotland; James Angus b 1881 Reay, Scotland; Marion Isabella b 1882 Thurso, Caithness, Scotland; Agnes MacMillan 1885 Reay, Caithness Scotland; Donald b abt 1887 Reay, Caithness, Scotland; Ronald b abt 1891 Haddington, Caithness, Scotland.

There is a possibility that the parents of William could be Malcolm MacDonald born in Durinish, Skye, Scotland who married a Marion/Maron maybe McSween in 1831 Durinish.

Any assistance with finding the correct parents would be appreciated as there are a few William's to choose from.

All the details you need should be on the couple’s marriage certificate.

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to access the original records. The indexes are free to search, the digital images pay per view.

There is a 1876 marriage in the index at North Berwick of a couple of this name. You need to look at that original record to see the names of the fathers and mothers of the couple as recorded.

The children’s Scottish birth certificates - also on the site - should record when and where their parents married too.

And it is likely that death certificates for the earlier generation will help you trace back. Also on the same site, along with census returns, pre 1855 parish registers etc.

William Malcom MacDonald was b 08 May 1877 in Prestonkirk.  This birth registration says his parents were married 01 JUN 1876 Berwick. The marriage gives their age (both 28) and parents names.

His parents were Malcolm MacDonald and Marion McSwean
Her parents were William King and Mary Robertson

Don

Edit - Malcom/Marion married 1831 Duirinish no children's baptisms were recorded or survived.

Ronald b abt 1891 Haddington, Caithness, Scotland.
Haddington is not in the county of Caithness. It is in the county of East Lothian, which was also known for a time as Haddingtonshire.

There is no record of the birth of a Ronald MacDonald in Caithness between 1889 and 1892.

There is a record of the birth of a Ronald McDonald in the parish of Haddington, County of East Lothian, in 1890, and a record of the birth of a Ronald McDonald in the parish of Dunbar, East Lothian in 1891.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
