1970 - following a fatal traffic accident in South Africa the body was cremated in SA and a relative brought the Ashes to be scattered on a family grave in England.

Would official permission have to be got to do this.

Do you mean permission to bring the ashes from SA or permission to scatter?

In both cases the answer is no.  Would probably have to declare the contents of the container at the airport and possibly produce a cremation certificate but no special permission would be needed.

Most churches require you to ask permission to scatter ashes on a family grave, some churches do not allow it.

I think you can scatter the ashes but if you want to bury them in the grave then permission is needed and a charge is made for opening the grave.

My 2 aunts were cremated and no permission was required to "scatter" their ashes on their parents grave.  This involved raking some of the soil from the surface then replacing it over the ashes.

However - rules will vary in the many different locations
