Explanation of Victorian BDM "place"

I am searching for the birth of an ancestor who was born in Victoria in 1860.
I have the name of the child, and the parents, but am wondering about where.

Mount Blackwood

Use VIC BDM and search births -

1860 to 1860 ....for family name use an asterisk....place name MTBL...

Find a birth and use that to find a family tree on Ancestry....which shows birthplace.....Mount Blackwood.

I do not think there is a list of standard abbreviations used. I suspect that there was consistency with the one recorder while ever that person was recording births.

I have two VIC BDMs in my collection.  one is for a birth at Mt Blowhard.     The other is for a marriage at Ballarat.    They walked from there to Tilpa NSW  ... and according to family folklore, the menfolk swam across the creeks and rivers on horseback, to show how safe it was, and then the womenfolk still were 'fretting'.

I simply did not know where to find the information you have generously provided.

I will go through the information you have provided for me. I did find that he was a commercial traveler in 1871 in Blackburn, Lancashire, and was wondering how he came to be in Australia to get married.

It would appear that he was chasing gold, not too uncommon in those days. I could not find a record for his travel to or from Australia, but will have another look when I have gone through all your information.
