Mary Cannon - 1871 Census
« on: Monday 31 August 20 13:52 BST (UK) »
Looking for a little bit of help with the 1871 census as I am now going around in circles with this search.

Looking for Mary Cannon who was born in 1862/1863 in Prestwich, Manchester (according to the 1881 census and in Manchester according to later censuses). I haven't located her birth registration but have everything from 1881 onwards.

In 1881 she is recorded as Mary Grant, wife of John Grant, and is living at 11 Bedford Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock and they have a baby son also called John. Now John (her husband) gives his place of birth as Scotland but it wasn't it was Manchester so I am now questioning whether her place of birth is Prestwich or Prestwick.

John Grant and Mary Cannon got married in 1883 at Manchester St Augustine. She was 21 years old, a spinster and her father was given as William Cannon (deceased). John Grant was of Irish descent so I suspect William Cannon may have been born in Ireland. The witnesses of the marriage were W Cannon and Elizabeth Cannon so possibly siblings as her father, William, was deceased.

There is a death for a William Cannon in 1872 and his address was 6 Wilson Street, Ancoats but I am struggling to search by address on Ancestry.

There were quite a lot of Gannons in Manchester so possibly a mistranscribe but Cannon is very clear on the certificates I have.

Possibly Mary's mother was called Ann. Their first daughter was named Catherine Ann. John's mother was Catherine so I thought it likely that Ann was Mary's mother.

Thanks for any help.  :)

I can see the family in 1881 3914/14/21
John is 29 yrs and Mary is 22 yrs b Prestwich and they are not yet married as they married in 1883, you say.

Is this the family in 1891 3216/100?
John 39yrs and Mary 29yrs. The three boys have mother Cannon in birth registers but there is no Catherine Ann and John’s occupation has changed.

The same family are in 1901 3732/13/18 but that Mary is Born Ashton  :-\
but still no Catherine.

This is possibly a red herring - but in 1871 there is a Mary CANNING b abt 1863 birth place Ashton, Manchester.

Father William aged 38 b Ireland
Mother Ann aged 31 b Ireland
Daughter Mary aged 8 b Ashton
Son William aged 4 b Manchester

The family are living at 9, Ebenezer St, Hulme.

Yes this is all correct. Baby John Grant who was on the 1881 census at 11 Bedford Street died in 1883. Catherine Ann was born in November 1887 and died 4th qtr 1988.

John's occupation as engraver in 1881 matches his 1871 occupation when he was at 23 York Street with his mother and brothers (RG10/3987/55 p 2). On baby John's birth certificate and  his marriage certificate in 1883 he was a steel turner. He was a copper turner when he died in 1915 and a labourer in the years in between.

This is great. We need an Elizabeth too to match both the witnesses on the marriage certificate.  :D

That family posted by Pennines ...

There is a Lucy Canning mmn Troy registered September quarter 1871 in Chorlton
She is possibly Lucy Cannon, 9 yrs a boarder at a Convent in Derby
Then there is William Cannon 14 yrs Tailor’s Apprentice in 1881

He wouldn’t be old enough to be married in 1883 if Elizabeth was a wife and there doesn’t seem to be a sister, Elizabeth.
