Edward Matthews Ann Clark South Australia
« on: Tuesday 01 September 20 07:32 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace

Edward Matthews born abt 1820 Coggeshall, Ess, England

arrived on board
The immigrant ship "Warrior
Departed London, 13 November 1839

Arrived Port Adelaide, 17 April 1840

On board was my Clark Family including

Ann Clark  -  Ann Application #6276 embark #3835 listed as House Maid

Ann is Bapt. 1 October 1820 East Claydon, Winslow, Buckinghamshire  (parents William and Mary Ann Rawlings (ins)

Ann & Edward marry at Holy Trinity Adelaide 10 Nov 1840

It looks like Edward and Ann return to England between 1852 (after a daughter Mary Ann is born... and before son Robert John is born in 1854)

I can track them through the Census up until 1891 and believe Edward died abt 1888 and Ann around 1894...

On the census for 1861 is a daughter Elizabeth who is meant to have been born about 1844?? in Adelaide...

I can find 8 children but not Elizabeth born in Adelaide....

Emily Jane about 1847
Jane born 1843 died 1844
William born 1846 died 1847
a Mary Ann born 1847 but no death date so far
William born  1849 along with a twin Edward who died 1850
Maria  born 1851   (died in Canada 1826)
Mary Ann 1852  but no death date as yet.

there are then another 5 children born in England

Robert John   Coggeshall, Ess, England
Ann Jane Bethia   Coggeshall, Ess, England
Alice            Chappel, Essex, England
Edith Lydia    "'''
Constance    """"
Florence Mary  ""

I am wondering if I am getting 2 Ann Clark and Edward Mathews (Matthews) confused.... is there 2 families around the same period in Adelaide or did Ann in fact have 15 children...."and can anyone find and Elizabeth born about 1843/1844 Adelaide"

Looks to me like the family a very much Bible Christian or Quaker so not find too many records re Baptisms...

Thanks in advance

Cheran

Hi Cheran

Cannot find the birth of Elizabeth.  Seven children on the Digger CD and none listed on the 'Early Births' CD.

If this is your Edward MATTHEWS, there is a birth notice for his twin sons in 1847 here:

Noting that he is "of Hindley St", there are a few other items on trove mentioning him, and he was a baker/pastry cook/confectioner. This advertisement from Nov 1853 says he is returning to England.

Interesting article here about a model of his shop which was to be sent to England in Dec 1843 as  a present for his sister's wedding. Does this fit with your Edward's family?

Are you researching -

"..Elizabeth who is meant to have been born about 1844?? in Adelaide..."

What else do you know about this Elizabeth?

Thanks for all the extra bits b pieces.

Only bits I can find re Elizabeth are the Census

1861 aged 17 born South Australia
1871. Aged 27 born  Australia
1881 Aged 37 born Adelaide South Australia. Wife of Charles Garnett
1891 Aged 47. Born South Australia
1901. Aged 57. Born South Australia
1911. Aged 67. Born South Australia.  4 children alive

Possibly death 1921....  found her death 8 November 1921 and from non conformist burials aged 78.... probate was 30 November 1921 left to Elizabeth Garnett spinster...

Charles is a Confectionerer/grocer

I wonder if she could be a twin with Sister Jane!

I really appreciated everyone's time looking for all the help....

Thanks for these links they have helped pinpoint when Edward and Ann would have returned to England and the twin sons would Edward and & William....
