if this is the family, Abiatha was born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire according to the census entry

1871 Stockton St, Middlesbrough RG10/4889 folio 14 pg 20
Abiathear head mar 33 labourer iron works b. Pontypool
Maria wife 27 b. Tenby
Urinah dau 7
Margaret dau 6
Charles Stroud son 5
Abiathear son 1
children all born Middlesbrough

death reg in 1884 gives his age as 43.

The one born living in Llangattock is still living there and married to Elizabeth when your man is in Yorkshire.
Maria is with her family in Middlesbrough in 1861.

Do you have the marriage certificate to confirm name & occupation of his father?

Just found him in 1861 already in Middlesbrough, lodging in Brook St RG9/3688 folio 9 pg 12

This is the right registration district for Llangatock so it could well be what you're looking for.  The problem with tracking the iron workers is that they tended to move along the hilltops in that area going from foundry to foundry for work.  That means it's difficult to keep track of them as they move from Breconshire to Monmouthshire.

I was interested to see that they ended up in Middlesbrough which is where my father's family lived.  That was a grim place indeed when I was young; hope it's improved since then!

it's the correct district for Llangattock, but Abiatha gives his place of birth on the census as Pontypool in 1871 and Varteg in 1861. There is an Abiatha Jones in Llangattock, but he stays there and his death is registered at Crickhowell in 1914.

many thanks for all the suggestions i am going to try and pursue the pontypool birth . Middlesbrough is now not a steel town ... due to the loss of the steel industry in the last few years . so what the future holds for people looking at the area in the next few years i dread to think. thank you all once again . zelda
