Walter Harris b.1899 US or UK?
« on: Tuesday 01 September 20 19:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm doing my sisters mother in laws birth parents tree and have got lost with her maternal grandad.
Walter Harris married in 1922 in UK to Florence M Reed. They are in Nottinghamshire in 1939, then I can see there are American records for them but dont have access to them. I have found Florence in earlier censuses and records in UK, but nothing for Walter so I dont know whether he is from the UK and went to the US post 1939 or whether he came from the US, got married stayed a while and then returned to the US after 1939.
Can anyone find him anywhere else please?
Thankyou  :)

There is a daughter of Walter & Florence who was in the US.  Janny Uldene Harris McGaffery or McCaffery was born 18 Sep. 1927 in Nottinghamshire and died 8 Dec. 2007.  Her Social Security number was issued in Florida in 1969, and her place of last residence was Troy, New York.

Janny's obituary is here and mentions traveling to family get-togethers in England.  https://www.troyrecord.com/news/obituaries-dec-11/article_cdb32eef-0145-53bf-a3e6-802780917307.html

Thankyou for your reply. It's not letting me look at that link u sent because of data protection. Janny is the birth mum, I wondered if any censuses or docs for Walter would say where he was born?

Death certificates in the USA require parents names so that is why his name is showing up in american records. Her social security application required her to name her DOB and parents.

She must have first married ?Cooper as she married John E McCaffery 1966 as Janny U Cooper 1966 registered Newmarket Suffolk

Do you have Walter & Florence's marriage record?  Maybe having his father's name would help with the census.

If you get a copy of the 1922 marriage certificate it will give you the address where he was living at the time and his fathers name.

The name Walter Harris is very common in Nottinghamshire.

If what you are seeing are the hints from ancestry.com, one is his daughter's SS information as posted by Shellyesq.
The other is a City Directory listing for Seattle, Washington, in 1918. That man can be accounted for. Ancestry's hint was based on his wife's name also being Florence. Here is the Seattle Walter Harris:

1918 Seattle City Directory
Walter L (Florence M) Harris, beltmaker, home at 5426 Barnes Avenue

He's the Walter Harris who married Florence Tolsma in King County, Washington, on 29 June 1913. The address of the clergyman who married them was in Seattle

When registering for the WWI Draft in 1917/18 he said he was born 26 November 1885, native US citizen, and it seems like he worked for someone named Tolsma, evidently a relative of his wife.

In 1920 and 1930, he is still a beltmaker, but living in Bellingham, Washington.
He probably died 28 January 1937 in Seattle at the age of 51.

the only reference to relatives, other than her parents are:

"Survivors in addition to her husband J. include her daughter S. M. of Scunthorpe, England; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews."

Initials only since they were living in 2007 and are or might still be. You'd know better than us :)
