Just so people know, you can search SS applications online now:
https://aad.archives.gov/aad/

I see no sign that any of Janny's siblings or that either of her parents ever went to the US.

From the 1939, what was the birthdate given for Walter Harris?
That and his father's name/occupation on the marriage certificate should help you find him earlier.
Do you know when Florence passed away?

Janny's first marriage is indexed in Mansfield, 1950, with middle initial "V" (presumably just an error)
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thankyou for your reply. It's not letting me look at that link u sent because of data protection. Janny is the birth mum, I wondered if any censuses or docs for Walter would say where he was born?

“ Janny U. McCaffery

TROY - Janny U. McCaffery, 80, of Pawling Avenue, died Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the Community Hospice in Samaritan Hospital.

Born in Nottingham County, England, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Florence Reed Harris and the wife of J E. McCaffery of Troy for 42 years.

She was a homemaker most of her life.

Jan enjoyed traveling with her husband J, loved children and all animals. Some of her most treasured moments were the family get-togethers in Troy and in England.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her for her beautiful smile, easy-going manner and wonderful wit.

Survivors in addition to her husband J include her daughter S M of Scunthorpe, England; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Ave. in Troy. Committal will be at a later date in England.

Memorial donations to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144, would be appreciated.”
