Lookup: CHARLOTTE GIBBS
« on: Thursday 03 September 20 02:41 BST (UK) »
I have got to the last of my Gibbs family in England and am struggling to find the answers needed.

Charlotte Gibbs was born on 30 March 1817 in Bishopstone, Wiltshire, daughter of James Gibbs and Jane Hart/Hort. She had a daughter Mary Jane Emm Gibbs as a single woman, baptised on 26 February 1837 in Flamston Abode, Bishopstone. Mary was also referred as Mary Jane Toomer in other Baptism results. I am assuming that the Emm & Toomer names may indicate the possible father of Mary as there were those family names found in the area on the Indexes.

The only other result I could find for both of them was in the 1841 Wiltshire Census, where they were staying together with Charlotte's mother Jane, with Elizabeth & Harriett Case. Case family is connected to Gibbs family through Charlotte's brother John, who married Susanna Case and moved to Australia. Charlotte's mother died a few years later in 1847.

I have tried various options to find them but cannot be sure I have the right ones. I would like to know whether both of them married and when & where they died.

I hope someone will be able to shed some light on their movements since 1841

I think it could be HOSPAGE  not that that is a word I can find anywhere.  But implies maybe a cottage hospital???
FindMyPast has transcribed as Female Reffuge

Mary Gibbs in that entry is born Weston, Wiltshire

incidentally on FindMyPast the surnames have been transcribed as

EWAMS    divorced   looks like Widow to me!
DIDLER     unmarried
TORFIELD   unmarried
GIBBS          unmarried

I am not sure where you are getting the name “Emm” from, unless there is a bad transcription floating around somewhere.  The baptismal register shows the child’s given names as Mary Ann Toomer, with a maternal surname of Gibbs. She wasn’t baptised “in Flamstone Abode”. She was baptised in Bishopstone with the family’s abode (residence) noted as Flamstone.

It seems I may have found the marriage of Charlotte Gibbs to a Charles Henry Wake/Walse on 28 January 1864 in Aldershot, Hampshire. According to the 1861 Census, she was 44 and born in Bishopstone, Wiltshire. I then found Charles had married again in 1865 to Amelia Watts, so I checked the Deaths and found that Charlotte Wake had died in the 3rd quarter of 1864 in Winchester, Hampshire.

I have found nothing more on her daughter Mary Jane at this stage other than what was posted.

P.S. Just received the posting regarding the reference to "Emm" in Mary Jane's Baptism details. the following is what I found in the Index for Bishopstone (Wilton) - Baptisms 1814-1849

Year   D/M      Surname     Given Name        Parents        Abode              Note
1837    26-Feb    GIBBS       Mary Jane Emm     Charlotte     Flamston         Baseborn

That’s a bad transcription then. You can see the baptismal register image for yourself on Ancestry.

Thanks Trish for your info on Mary Toomer and George, Very Helpful.

With regard to their burials, I also noticed that in 1901, George was a pensioner, and wondering whether he was on a army pension because of his earlier time in the Army, or a general aged pension. Either way, are there avenues where i could find out when the pension stopped, as that would indicate roughly when he died?. Just thinking. I have been trying Find My Past for both of them without success so far.
Thanks once again to everyone for you assistance
