Alexander Barclay 1806 - 1874
« on: Thursday 03 September 20 12:05 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some thoughts on the second husband of my 3 x great grandmother please.
Census records & death certificate show he was born abt. 1806/1807.
His death certificate shows his parents as Alexander Barclay & Elizabeth Weir, the witness was a neighbour James Ross.
I have looked on Scotland's people index for a birth around that time & there are 10 children born to Robert Barclay & Catherine Weir between 1801 & 1820.
My thoughts are this is correct & the neighbour was unsure of his parents first names.
Any thoughts please.

I should have mentioned that there is an entry for 13/11/1806 for Alexander.

Looks very likely.

When did he marry? If it was 1855 or later his marriage certificate will tell you who he said his parents were.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

He married Margaret Simpson (nee Adam) in 1835 so no information on marriage record & as far as I can tell they had no children. She was 15 years older than him & had 4 children from her previous marriage to George Simpson, the last one in 1829. Margaret was 45 when she married Alexander so probably too old for more children by then. I have also just found them in the 1841 census without children but another couple of Barclay's who were servants.
