James SMITH (1850-1911) of Deptford- census locations 1891-1911?
« on: Thursday 03 September 20 14:20 BST (UK) »
James Smith was a carpenter from Deptford, the son of James Smith and Sarah Carpenter who was living with his parents at least until the 1881 census. Although he was buried in the family tomb at Brockley Cemetery in November 1911 I cannot locate him after 1881. I have found no evidence for a marriage.

Any information would be appreciated

There is a 1911 entry for a James Smith b 1851 Deptford - have you ruled it out?

He was an apprentice carpenter in 1871 but can’t see the 1881 entry you mention

I'm trying to fill incomplete data in the family and haven't tried ordering a death certificate, presumably the death registered in Greenwich in q4 1911, because it would be so easy to get the wrong certificate with such a common name.

The 1911 census entry, a dock labourer living in a Salvation Army hostel in Westminster seems unlikely since the family had been builders in Deptford for most of the 19th century and all appeared to stay in the area. His grandfather's 1895 will makes no mention of his grandson James.

Although he was buried in the family tomb at Brockley Cemetery in November 1911

I see a James Smith buried at Brockley in 1911, but the date of burial was the 31st October, not in November. His occupation 'a Master Builder'. Is this the person you are referring to?

The address was 90 Westcombe Gardens, which leads to this in the 1911 census living at the same address https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWR8-RZ3

At the same address in 1901 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9DR-YQQ

Edit: in 1891 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q3JM-LN2

Always with the Walker family?

Not sure if I've followed the right person, but posting it anyway!

I saw that entry as well Jen & did wonder but the birthplace and occupation were different than given

There is a 1912 probate entry which I think could be the 1911 death

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Died 25.10.1911 at the Greenwich Town Hall. Probate to Charles Smith licensed victualler & George James Smith - gentleman

Thanks both. that's the right man, both father and grandfather (also James Smith) were builders and the executors of his will include his elder brother. For some reason Ancestry's probate search wasn't showing me the probate entry.
