Surname spelling variants
« on: Friday 04 September 20 05:56 BST (UK) »
Afternoon.

Afraid being a skip reader, spelling is not my strong point.

When doing family searches I know a surname like NEWMAN can be found in the NZ press spelt Neumann, Neuemann, Muemann and Nyemann, and even any of the previous with just one “n”, if there was the potential for it being the name of someone who spoke German.

However I have come across two examples I’m struggling to come up with variants, to try and expand my PapersPast and Archway searches.  C. 1860’s

NIUKIE / NUKEY

NEDLAND

Any suggestions appreciated.

May I offer further spelling variations

Neumenn
Neuminn

I think the accents of all those who flocked to the Colonies from around the globe in the mid to late 1800s and their literacy levels in English as a second or third language, plus the lack of literacy among those employed in administrative roles ... gives every opportunity for a misheard surname to be further misrecorded ... and then later, mistranscribed ..

What occupation....residential addresses.......house names......property names.......ship of arrival.....family names that next generation married into......burial plots?

Nedlands appears in Archway. But as a place name.

Knuckey for Nukey/Niukie may be stretching it a bit.........

Added: Also Nooke and Nookes.

Mistakes made when people believe you need to pronounce the 'e' at the end. I am sure that there are families who do pronounce the 'e' and families who don't.

Thankyou for taking the trouble to reply.

Newman was just given as an example.

The other two are of interest by association.

Nedand I have found only once in a NZ wide PapersPast research.

Niukie / Nuekey caught my eye because the one was recorded in a clipping from Ohaupo in the North Island, while the other was recorded as a costal passenger due to arrive at the port of Nelson,  in the South Island.  But in both cases was associated with surnames I have been trying to sort out, re families involved in the Waikato Militia.

So far compemporary local history has recorded the presence of families whom, todate I've been unable to find primary records for, in support thereof.

When the Auckland branch of Archives NZ will allow me to return to their viewing room, I will be following up with more 1860 -1870's land records to see what I can find. Most but not all; sought Naturalization and land ownership, and the voting registration of the period included details of properties they were invested in.

Alan.

PS. While raised in various countries, these particular settlers had Geman speaking roots, and were probably Hebrews, but in NZ strongly supported local Catholic and Protestant Churches as well. Therefore no one factor can be used to sort out the reoccuring short list of First Testament first names.

Hello again.

No need to apologise.

Niewke was one spelling I did not think to try.

Unfortunately some sites like historic B D & Marriages, do not offer you search options, and with others it can be too many, which you then have to refine when you get a strong hit rate.

The MYERS and OHAUPO pioneers research I now find myself involved in, is struggling to find primary records to back up contemporary press, and obit.,  accounts and reported deaths.
Not helped by the fact that I don't have ready access to electoral rolls, and published family trees.

Never expected to be time-lining four or five Charles MYERS [plus varient spellings] trying to sort them, and their associates out. Though I'm very interested in the early Waikato pioneer farmers, I had not before realized Colonel Krippner, and other German speaking 3rd Waikato Militia, were the predominant settlers of Ohaupo.
