James NEWINGTON children baptisms
« on: Saturday 05 September 20 08:05 BST (UK) »
Hoping for some assistance please.

James NEWINGTON & Phoebe MYLSE married 15 Sep 1601 Kingston By Sea.

According to James Will his surviving children were:

Mary
Elizabeth
Sara
John

A pedigree has John plus Samuel and Joseph who died unmarried however does not include any females.

I have been searching for baptisms for the children with limited success..
Mary was baptised at Kingston by Sea in 1602
Elizabeth at Southwick in 1607

James and family were living at Southwick when he wrote his Will.  He was buried at Kingston By Sea in 1627 as was Phebe.

Assistance gratefully received.

Hello Omega,

James was a yeoman of Southwick.

Do you think Church Warden was a paid position or ??

I too found the Felpham ones but not being a locale I was unsure.

Thanks so much Omega.

From my grandfather's time in the early 1900s I don't think Church Warden was a paid position in the church, there were usually two and they were people of standing in the community.  My grandfather was the sexton at his church which was a paid position being full time employee of the church and a 'jack of all trades' including gravedigger!

I think that the Felpham baptisms are too far away from what appears to be James' territory, Kingston on Sea is just in land of and contiguous with Southwick.  Shoreham is a possible location for the other baptisms but it parish records aren't currently on-line at SFHG or anywhere else as far as I can see.

Thank you very much artifis for the considered response.
