can anyone read......
« on: Saturday 05 September 20 11:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone out there make out the occupation of Jonathon Samson on this recently acquired marriage certificate?  It is baffling us at the moment.

Your help would be much appreciate as it may and I use the word loosely then help us find thus erstwhile gentleman!

I think it is Dealer (the D is not closed at the top).
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

What is the date of the marriage?

My first thoughts were possibly "Pleader" or "Bleacher", but I don't think it is either of those.

There are no other capital Ps or Bs to compare with ... and there are too few letters for Bleacher.

I therefore tend to concur with the others ... the two leading tall loops are quite possibly a single letter, so Dealer.

All identified names up to and including my great x5 grandparents: Abbot Andrews Baker Blenc(h)ow Brothers Burrows Chambers Clifton Cornwell Escott Fisher Foster Frost Giddins Groom Hardwick Harris Hart Hayho(e) Herman Holcomb(e) Holmes Hurley King-Spooner Martindale Mason Mitchell Murphy Neves Oakey Packman Palmer Peabody Pearce Pettit(t) Piper Pottenger Pound Purkis Rackliff(e) Richardson Scotford Sherman Sinden Snear Southam Spooner Stephenson Varing Weatherley Webb Whitney Wiles Wright

We had wondered about that but there aren't any capital D's anywhere on the cert for comparison. We were initially very hung up that it looked like the S's but realised that the scribe is consistent with the use of capitals and not joining the capital letters.
The date of the marriage is August 1903 and these are Jewish immigrants from what is now Belarus

I agree with "Dealer" - it also makes sense as an occupation.

If Jonathan lived in the UK did he appear on the 1901 or earlier censuses? His d/c should give his occupation.

Did the groom have any siblings whose marriage certificates you could purchase to compare father's occupation?

The father never came to the UK we know very little about him. The groom consistently claims that he is on his own on his naturalisation and Hebrew marriage certificate.

I think we'll settle for dealer as I don't think we'll get anything else.  Thank you all for taking the time to look if you have any other bursts of inspiration then post away!

Dealer is the only occupation that fits. I have seen open Ds like that.

If he married a Leah, I think I've found him on the 1901 and the 1911 but there's no sign of his father* or him before that.

Do you have any information about when he came to UK?

* add - I see that you say he didn't come to UK.
