William James Newman
« on: Monday 07 September 20 12:23 BST (UK) »
I am researching the above who was born on 25th April 1918.  His father being William Ernest Newman.

He served with the 5th Gloucester Regiment (5783116 Sergeant) in France and was awarded a Mention in Dispatches in the London Gazette (20 DECEMBER 1940).

The 5th Gloucester Regiment became 43rd Recce Regiment and served from mid July 1944 in Northwest Europe.  He received an Efficiency medal in June 1945.

Following the end of WW2, William must have enlisted in the regular army as his marriage to Herta Agnes Wally Häcker on the 12 September 1950 shows him as a Cpl  5183116 in the Royal Armoured Corps.

Herta was born in 1909 and died in 2005.

I believe on leaving the army, he resided in Gloucester with his wife in Upleadon Road, Dymock, Newent.

I can not definitely confirm William's date of death and would welcome any assistance in tracking him down.
