I fell into the trap of advising our BoP specialist researcher that she should also take account of Turanga PapersPast hits, as they too would most likely be early mentions of Tauranga and it's port, only to discover later that there was a beach landing place much further along the East Coast that was being mentioned in very early shipping asccounts. But most often, they are typo's and the then lack of uniformity, as to how Maori names should be spelt.

That is why I was garded in my reply #4 above, as I have only visited that harbour a couple of times.

Could this be your Thomas Phillips?  I found him in the British Southern Whale Fishery Voyage and Crew databases.
