A mysterious place on a death certificate
« on: Tuesday 08 September 20 16:38 BST (UK) »
I received a copy of a death certificate this afternoon which came as a bit of a surprise. It was issued after an inquest had been held before the Leicester Borough Coroner on March 21st 1885. A 25 year old man had been found drowned "about twentieth March" 1885 in "A Pit containing water near the ???????"
I don't recognise this description. Could it read Skinner Hills USD?
I have also looked through the Newspaper Archives but found nothing

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks - Alan

And Mr Google says that "Spinney Hills" is an area of Leicester - well done JenB.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Now confirmed it:
Quote from Leicester Chronicle March 28th 1885 -

"Last Saturday and inquest was held on the body of a man named Smith who was found drowned in a pit in an old brickyard near the Spinney Hills Recreation Ground."

Hope this 1885/86 OS map is of assistance https://maps.nls.uk/view/101592690.  Waterfilled pits and watercourses are coloured blue.

Stay safe.
