Birth re-registration
« on: Wednesday 09 September 20 12:23 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather has been registered 4 times.

In 1920's as Norman Smith mother Lewis, Norman Lewis mother Smith and Norman Lewis mother Lewis, and in 1940's as Norman Lewis mother Lewis. His siblings David and Maureen are also re-registered in this year.

Norman's father Joseph Smith was married to Alice Lewis in 1915 and had Joseph 1916 and Gwendoline 1922.
Other children by Alice's sister Agnes Lewis were David 1923, Norman 1926, Dulce 1928 and Maureen 1938.
Alice died in a fire in 1927, newspaper suggests Agnes was involved in the death and states Alice had 2 children.
Agnes and Joseph lived as man and wife following this and married in 1956.

Why would there be 4 registrations? Will I need to buy 4 certificates?

Are you sure that it has not been indexed three times in the 1920s. Not registered three times.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

You would not be able to order the very first one that you found as Smith/Lewis because there is no page number.  You are directed to the 1940s birth registration.

So only three certificates can be purchased.

The two SQ ones in the 1920s could be the same or two different people who happen to have the same names.  The original image shows that the page number with the 'a' added is at the bottom of the page that the information appears on.

You will have to decide whether you wish to purchase all three or not.  Depends on how much you wish to clarify these births.

It seems that the father Joseph married one sister first, Alice and when she died Joseph eventually married Agnes.

The ball is now in your court  ::)  :D

You can't work this one out just from the indexes - it appears that:

1) registered in 1926 with parents as Smith/Lewis  (mother and father named and claiming to be a married couple)

2) a correction made to remove the father's name from that first entry, leaving the birth with just the mother named (Lewis/Lewis) - that is where the (a) comes from, it is a re indexing of the first entry taking away Smith.

3) re-registered in 1943 adding back a father's name (but as an unmarried couple).

There are only two register entries  to order from if you want the full story - looks like a complicated one.
