« on: Wednesday 09 September 20 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hello again ,Was there any large department stores in Cape town  in the 1890's and if so did they have   dress departments in them,I have found out that Mrs Hughes (drummond castle shipwreck) was  a supervisor  of dress makers at a large establishment
Thanks

I can't help I'm afraid, but if you could give more details about the source of this information regarding Mrs Hughes then someone may be able to help you.

For example,  Mrs Hughes being a "supervisor of dress makers at a large establishment" is quite vague and my first thought would be she may have been a supervisor at a factory or drapers rather than a department store.

A quick google throws up a couple of names: Stuttafords and Garlicks but there are probably plenty of    others. I would imagine any large department store would sell women's dresses.  :)

There was Stuttafords in Adderley street which opened about 1860. You could also try  "memories of Cape Town" on facebook.

From the Internet

A population census is typically held every five years, but because of a lack of capacity within Statistics South Africa, it was decided that the interval will be extended to 10 years. A Community Survey was conducted in the place of the 2006 census. The importance of a population census is that the he census plays an essential role in public administration.

While South Africa did hold regular Census's they have not kept the forms, they were routinely destroyed once the data was aggregated. You can find some early Muster Rolls transcribed on Eggsa.com(1656-1712), and some Ofgaagrollen(tax rolls) on familysearch.org for around 1770-to 1820
