Samuel Moore and family
« on: Wednesday 09 September 20 14:04 BST (UK) »
Samuel Moore and Anna Sheepy were married in January 1698 at Curdworth in Warwickshire. I have a marriage license for the couple which gives Anna's residence as Kingsbury and Samuel was of Digbeth in Birmingham.

I have found the baptisms for four of Samuel and Anna's children which all took place at St Martin in Birmingham but I am trying to find out what became of them.

George 1702

Samuel 1705

Defnah (?) 1708 (I'm not sure what her name was supposed to be, the image definitely reads as "Defnah" to me. Could this be the daughter Hannah that was mentioned in Samuel's will?)

Catherine 1710 (my ancestor. She married John Eades in 1729, Joseph Phillips in 1732 and William Joye in 1770. Died in Wellington, Shropshire in 1785)

Anna was buried at St Martin in August 1731 and Samuel was buried in July 1733. From Samuel's will, I know that he owned houses and land in Osset in Essex (I think this may actually be Orsett), Atherstone and several houses on Parke Street in Birmingham. The will also revealed the existence of two more children, "Mary Moore" and "Hannah Biddle", who I would love to be able to find baptisms for if possible.

The will refers to his son George as "George Moore of London... a cutler" so I am assuming George was living in that area by that time.

Have you seen this marriage? Found in the parish register of Baxterley  ???

"Samuel Moore of the parish of Kingsbury and Mrs Sheepy of Atherstone in the Parish of Mancetter were marryed January 22: 1689"

That’s very strange because it looks like my couple but the year is wrong. I have a copy of the marriage license which is dated 1698.

It’s definitely not your couple but the similar names are something to keep in mind.

“Defnah” Moore could be Daphne Moore? I’ve seen the image too and it certainly looks like Defnah to me.

Thanks jimnix, I’ve asked around and others think it could be “Daphne Moore” too.

I got your message about searching for a marriage between Hannah Moore and a Mr Biddle but no luck so far.

How are Samuel’s children referred to in his will? Are the daughters under their married names?

The children in the 1733 will are:

“George Moore of London, Cutler”

“Mary Moore”

“Hannah Biddle”

“Katherine Phillips”

“Samuel Moore”

So if Catherine and Hannah were under married names, I’m assuming Mary wasn’t married by this point.

I’ve found a marriage license for “George Moor” to Mary Eades (it’s available on F M P), both were of St Martin’s parish but looks like they were married at Handsworth on 28 July 1723. We might be able to follow them through the baptisms of their children, it should give you a rough idea for when he arrived in London.

EDIT: It’s worth seeing if George’s wife Mary Eades was related to Catherine’s first husband John Eades.

Looks like Samuel’s daughter Hannah married Daniel Robinson at Handsworth in 1719. Marriage license uses the name “Anna”, she was probably named after her mother. Maybe Hannah/Anna married Mr Biddle as a widow of Daniel Robinson?

The marriage license gives Anna’s birth year as 1691, obviously before Samuel and Anna were married. This probably isn’t the right woman, sorry.
