1857 Marriage William Payne to Sarah Bennett in Tiverton, Devon
« on: Wednesday 09 September 20 16:52 BST (UK) »
 I am getting better at this but ;

Profession of William ? Looks like an X in there?

The Ink Blots have defeated me on Father's name for William, which must be the most common first name in the family line so they are so awkward to trace back.

Susan's father's name will hopefully be very useful as she is a widow and help to lock-in her 1st marriage.

thanks
Chris

Agree Mason and R Payne. Susan's father is R Bennett. Not very helpful!

Thanks,

R for Richard Payne sounds good.

Perhaps Susan used her birth surname for this marriage, rather than her 1st married name, if her
 Father is Bennett.

Yes - I thought it odd that father's name looked like R Bennett if she was a widow.

His profession looks like Carpenter, so that may help on census records.

Hi Chris

Susan is also showing as Bennett (and a widow) in her 1851 census entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGJZ-9ZB

In the same year/place is this entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGJZ-9Z1

Susan is right next door, as a widow!

In the 1861 census, after Susan married, there is a "son in law" Henry Bennett. I think they meant stepson.   A good fit for Henry's birth at the GRO  leads to mmn Coombs.

Backtracking to 1841, there is this:
Archive reference   HO107
Piece number   210
Book number   4
Folio number   6
Page number   7

Richard   Cooms   Male   55   1786   Devon, England
Ann   Cooms   Female   55   1786   Devon, England
Susan   Bennet   Female   31   1810   Devon, England
John   Cooms   Male   20   1821   Devon, England
Harriet   Bennett   Female   9   1832   Devon, England
John   Bennett   Male   2   1839   Devon, England

The Richard on Monica's link for the 1851 census could be this one:
BENNETT, RICHARD  COOMBES      COOMBES
GRO Reference: 1841  D Quarter in ST THOMAS UNION  Volume 10  Page 211

The Henry on the 1861 census could be this one:
BENNETT, HENRY        COOMBS
GRO Reference: 1844  J Quarter in TIVERTON AND DULVERTON  Volume 10  Page 260

Thanks MonicaL and Bbart for the extra research.

Maybe the properties on Fosters Street where small so Susan lodged at number 26  and kept her children at no 27 under supervision of eldest daughter Harriett ?  Perhaps that was more convenient that looking for lodgings where the whole family could reside together.

I had not spotted the significance of Henry Bennett on 1861 Census.  On FamilySearch I have a note that only the parents are present and the children,  because they are on next page,  have been split into a separate record.  Findmypast keeps them together as single household.

At present I am doing a mini study of all individuals born in first 10 years of the GRO District of Tiverton who had the same soundex form of Pine. So mixed in with my direct ancestors of this period and location I will likely find some cousins, distant relations and interconnections between family names.
