It is definitely possible in England and a hospital/workhouse death registered some days, and then in different years, before birth.  We have found that on here for other people.

Cazmatic did not say when in 1919.

Is it possible that her death was registered before her birth?

There is a death of a Mary McMullen in 1918, age 0, Coatbridge or Old Monkland.

A bit of long shot but not impossible.

Especially if she didn't just before New Year so final quarter of 1918, then the parents realised they needed to register the birth as well so did it right at the start of January (possibly thinking they had done both in the first place)

Could the family have gone back to Ireland for a visit and Mary died there

Have you checked Marriage records in Scotland and England?
There's also the possibility that Mary's rather unusual surname may have been transcribed differently.

This was true for me: My great grandmother had a set of twins whose births were registered seven months after their death which occurred  shortly after birth. In England, though.
