ERNEST PHILLIP HOPE
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 02:59 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
Is it possible to find any information on the above in the BRITISH ARMY please.  He would have been born c1865, went to INDIA where he "met" the mother of his two children and came to Australia.  There is no death record for him in NSW and no birth record for his son ERNEST WILLIAM HOPE born 1890 NSW.  There is supposedly one daughter who died in a house fire in Sydney.  Not too much to go on but hopefully this Ernest HOPE may be found in British Army Service Records 1760-1915 if possible.  Kindest regards and many thanks Dianna from Sydney Aus

The only one I can see is Ernest HOPE born about 1863 (age 19 yrs 4 months on 4 February 1882)
Short Attestation, Queens Own (Royal West Kent) Regt
Says he was born Marylebone, Middlesex. Occupation Porter.

Attached to this record is a page obviously relating to WW1 with mother as a Mrs Cowell of Dover,
But I think this must be a compilation error. He would have been over 50, so surely not WW1

There is also a medal card for an Ernest HOPE
this one is in the 3rd Battalion Kings Royal Rifles  Regt number 1147
Medals are for 1884-1886 Sudan. In an unheaded column it says Cyprus.

and he was at action at the two places in the clip attached

Whether or not this is your man I do not know.
I had a quick look at the FIBIS website,  www.fibis.org nothing under Ernest HOPE but there are a lot of entries under HOPE alone you might want to plough through.

What was the name of the wife and daughter?

Why do you think Ernest William was born in NSW?

Is this the son’s marriage and death?:

5345/1923 HOPE Ernest W F to TOWELL Sarah J

28676/1952 HOPE Ernest William F IRONWORKER CANTERBURY 62 YRS MARRICKVILLE

Death and funeral notices, 2nd and 5th columns: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18284689

HI Jamjar yes the information you have on ERNEST W HOPE here in NSW is correct in regards to his death (parents unknown on certificate) and his marriage to Sarah Jane Towell, I have both certificates and it has mother not listed, on his marriage certificate which I found really odd!

It say's on his marriage certificate that he was born in MARRICKVILLE, NSW age 32 when married!!

Maybe he "thought" he was born in NSW!! Maybe he was actually born in INDIA!!

That is the problem we do not know the name of his wife and daughter!!  So annoying!  No death certificate for the daughter in NSW with father named Ernest!  Still looking at shipping records.

So I thought I would check on British Army records and go from that end and not this one so to speak.  Maybe he did not have the middle name of PHILLIP.  That is what is on his marriage certificate in 1923 say's father deceased.  Thanks for your help Regards Dianna

Hi Mckha489, thanks for that information.  Maybe I can do some research into that regiment and see if any of the guys served in India, maybe a long shot but have to give it a go I guess.  The age looks good for having a child in 1890 perhaps.  Don't imagine he was in WW1.

Where does this information come from re "The only one I can see is Ernest HOPE born about 1863 (age 19 yrs 4 months on 4 February 1882)
Short Attestation, Queens Own (Royal West Kent) Regt
Says he was born Marylebone, Middlesex. Occupation Porter."  Many thanks its a start anyway.  Kindest regards Dianna

The short attestation is on both Ancestry (filed under WW1) and FindMyPast
the medal cards are on Ancestry

I can’t see any reference to ‘Ernest Phillip Hope’ on FamilySearch, FREEBMD etc.

It is possible that he made the name up for the purpose of the marriage.

NSW Criminal Court Records have

August 2 1889  George MILLER 31, an Accountant
alias Arthur LLOYD, Cecil HOPE,
Edward HARRIS, George COLE
Ernest YOUNG, A. CHARLTON
WILSON, CLARKE
RIDLEY, NANNELL
CUNNINGHAM, TRAFFORD

the way it is written one could assume Ernest went with all from Wilson on, but that would only be an assumption

Crime
Obtain Property with intent to steal
Larceny as a Bailee

Plead guilty to 1. Horse stealing, 2 Larceny.
sentenced 2 years on each charge cumulative. Bathurst Gaol

Hi Yes when you search anywhere for ERNEST PHILLIP HOPE nothing comes up. I think I will just stick to ERNEST HOPE with no middle name b c 1860ish and see if that helps the research, who knows why PHILLIP was put in there!!  Interesting looking on the 1871 Yorkshire England Census there is an Ernest R? HOPE born in East India, Bombay c 1862, stepson Mr Crawshore I think it say's.  Strange coincidence.  Thanks
