I suggest you contact Scotlandís People and request a clearer copy - they are very good with this type of request.

In the mean time, have you located John on any census to see if his occupation tallies with any of the suggestions given here?

Added: there is a John McLaren with wife Agnes and two young children on the 1881 census who appear to be this family - John is a Sailmaker.

is Wincey Powerloom Weaver. An internet search for "wincey powerloom weaver" brings up a number of other examples.

Wincey is a Scottish name for a type of cloth also known as Linsey-woolsey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linsey-woolsey

I agree with Arthur - it's Wincey Powerloom Weaver.

Add - I think wincey is possibly the same or related to winceyette. Does anyone remember sheets, night wear, etc. made from winceyette  :)

Definitely John McLaren, Sail Maker - I have new spec's  8)

But should you send an email off to SP they will not grant your request as yet (as recent as last Friday) stating they are working from home but they will refund your credits.

Thank you everyone for your observations.
