Which Mary Ireland?
« on: Friday 11 September 20 15:04 BST (UK) »
My 5xGt. Grandfather, Thomas Johnson (b. 1741, Farnworth, Widnes) was married to a Mary Ireland, registered at Prescot 3/2/1762. But which Mary? is it Mary from Grt. Sankey (b.1740), Mary from Sutton (b.1740), or Mary from Childwall (b.1742)?
Other family trees on Ancestry appear to favour the Childwall Mary, but their trees do not have the birth of my 4xGt. Grandfather, also Thomas Johnson, b. Cronton, Aug. 1763.
Any help gratefully received.

Where did you find the information that Thomas’ parents where Thomas Johnson and Mary Ireland? The baptism entry doesn’t give a surname for Mary.

I’ve now found the marriage entry you refer too  ( on Ancestry) and it is the book of banns rather than the parish register.

Thomas Johnson of  Crompton but later says he’s stated to be of the parish so perhaps whoever filled in the book meant Cronton.

Mary Ireland is said to be of Sutton.

If you can find their age at death that would help with working out their baptisms.

Gibel. The surname appears on a family tree passed on to me from a distant cousin. He is, unfortunately, no longer with us, but, I am led to believe that he did a lot of research. Of course, I cannot be sure that he was absolutely right. I have double checked his research which I believe is correct up to and including my 4xGt. grandfather, Thomas Johnson, (b1763), but, I must admit, this Mary Ireland is puzzling me. There is a marriage of a Thomas (5xGt.G) to a Mary Rigby in 1756, but I am discounting this as Thomas would only have been 15.

A marriage parish record which has been transcribed Mary Freland but is more likely Ireland notes that she was of Sutton Parish and Thomas of Crompton. 03/02/1762 Prescot, St Helens Lancashire, this is the only parish record on that date as far as I can see.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thanks for looking, ColC. Yes, I have this information and in my mind is the front runner for the Mary that I am seeking. Cheers.

Just posting for detailed info

Baptism: 24 Apr 1763 St Luke (formerly St Wilfrid), Farnworth (Widnes), Lancashire, England
Thomas Johnson - Son of Thomas Johnson & Mary
    Abode: Cronton

This seems to be the 1st baptism of the couple
The future baptisms in the same church have them living in Widnes

Thanks lancsann. I see three other baptisms at St. Lukes. Eliz (1765), Sarah (1767), Mary (1769). Are these the same to which you are referring? Possible siblings of my Thomas. More work to do!
