« on: Saturday 12 September 20 22:36 BST (UK) »
Hello
Ancestry says that James Thompson Groome died in Victoria Australia in 1883, how can I find any further information about that? There is plenty about him in Manchester .
Many thanks

There are a few mentions on trove
https://trove.nla.gov.au

Search for "james t groome", "james groome", "j t groome" etc. There are some mentions in the Warragul area in 1881/1882, however the death notice cupoflife gave you has him in Bairnsdale in 1883 (some 180 km away).

You would need to buy the death certificate to find more certain information.

However, it looks to me that he is the son of Edward GROOME and Margaret TOWNS who married in Manchester in 1824
Banns can be seen on Ancestry.

Among their children also was Thomas.

He married Martha WADDINGTON in March 1/4 1848
GROOME Thomas
WADDINGTON Martha
Manchester
20/606

These 2 had some children who may have died young.

Thomas came to Australia

Name Thomas GROOME
Born about 1824
Age 30
Arrival Date    Jan 1854
Arrival Port Melbourne and Sydney, Australia
Departure Por    Liverpool
Ship Merlin
Nationality English

She followed to Australia

Martha GROOME
Born about 1825
Age    33
Arrival Date 15 Jun 1858
Arrival Port Melbourne, Australia
Ship Rising Sun
Other details Accompanied by 1 child and destined for Maryborough, Vic.

They had a son

William Thomas GROOME
Year 1863
Birth Place Sandhurst, Sandridge, Victoria
Year   1863
Father Thomas Groome
Mother Martha Waddington
Reg   4459

Death of Thomas (snr)

GROOME, Thomas
Aged 59
Father Edw
Mother Margaret TOWNS
Yr 1880/Reg 8058

Death of Martha
GROOME, Martha
Aged 54
Father WADDINGTON joh
Mother Elizabeth MALLINSON
Yr 1878 Reg 2863

So with  brother in Victoria and a jail term for larceny in Manchester behind him, perhaps James Thompson GROOME thought a move to Australia was a good idea.

ADDING for clarity
The details of marriages for James Thompson GROOME and the jail sentence can be seen on Ancestry. I have not typed them or cited them as I suspect our OP has access to see them.

FYI

The will of Thomas GROOME is digitized and available to read. He left all to his son mentioned above.

Thank you All for solving that one.
I had missed Thomas going to Australia,  James Thompson was married 3 times, in 1861, 1865 and 1872 when he said he was a bachelor!, then after the prison sentence, thought he had gone off the scene, he left a wife & 2 daughters.
