Phelps Merriott
« on: Sunday 13 September 20 12:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
looking for a 2nd opinion / opinions on William Phelps

Son Joseph Phelps baptised 20 Mar 1803 Seavington St Mary
Married to Grace Chislett 26 May 1795 Seavington St Mary

Am reasonably confident about the above 2 pieces of information, next 2 pieces of info am less sure about.

Death 17 Nov 1846 Seavington St Mary
Baptism 7 Sep 1766 Merriott

So perhaps he moved to Seavington to marry Grace ?
Most of this info is from FreeReg, is there anywhere else I could possibly find a piece of information to verify ?

Thanks

In 1841 he is living next door to a Jarman Phelps - 60 - he appears to have been baptised at Seavington in 1775 parents William & Elizabeth, could they be siblings

Interesting, I have probables for William's parents being
John Phelps 1730-1813 born and buried in Merriott
Elizabeth Markes / Marks 1730-1785 born and buried in Merriott

No other John Phelps marrying an Elizabeth seemed to marry in Somerset that would fit Jarman.

So the names fit but not sure why they would move to Seavington then seemingly back to Merriott ?

Very interesting

Jarmans parents were William/Elizabeth not John /Elizabeth.   :-\  Giles is a name that is common in this family and that of the Jarman Phelps who is in Dowlish Wake.

Did your couple name name a child Giles  :-\

Giles does seem to be a family name.

William and Grace had a son called Giles.
Their son Joseph named one of his sons Giles, Giles Hext Phelps.

Maybe he isn't from Merriott after all

I can't find Jarman on FreeReg at all, the first entry for a Phelps that is in Seavington St Mary is in 1795 ?

Is Jarman a miss spelling of another name ?

Hello, just catching up with rootschat after a longish absence and came across your queriy, interested since my ancestors came from the Seavingtons, Dowlish, Whitelackington, Lopen, Merriott etc.

<So the names fit but not sure why they would move to Seavington then seemingly back to Merriott ?>

Seavington and Merriott are only about 3 miles apart - no distance to travel/walk in the early 1800's. Highly likely that William moved to Seavington to marry Grace - perhaps he helped on or took over Grace's father's farm or business? Then, perhaps he wished to be buried in Merriott in a family grave?

Are there any wills for Grace's family that you can access to see if he, or his children, receive a
bequest? Might give some clues.
