Clerk or Clark - Looking for death date
« on: Sunday 13 September 20 18:46 BST (UK) »
Hello all!
I am trying to find my gr-gr-gr grandfather's death date.
He was Arthur Clark (or Clerk) and was married to Mary McBride
He lived on Darlymple St in Girvan and was a cotton loom weaver.
He shows on the 1841 and 1851 census but not the 1861 so my assumption is that he died between 1851 and 1861.
I have searched SP but no luck.

Any help is grately appreciated!

What was Arthur’s year of birth, and do you know his parent’s names? This might help in the search.

As you probably know, the Statutory registers on SP start at 1855, so if you believe he died before 1861, you have a small window to find him there. Prior to that you only have Church Records which don’t provide as much identifying or useful information.

A couple of thoughts .... Do you have Mary in the 1861 census and was she a widow? If not, have you looked for Arthur in the 1871 census in case he was just missing from the 1861? Depending on what census you are looking at I know the transcriptions of Scottish census on Ancestry can be a bit hit and miss, often with odd spellings - unsure about others, but you might need to be creative in your searching - looking for first names only, places of birth, other family members etc.

Do you have Mary’s death and burial? Is Arthur with her?

Regarding the surname, have you also searched for Clarke? Maybe search for Cl*rk* to catch variations in spelling. Maybe consider broadening the area when looking for his death as he may have died away from home.

Mary is noted as a widow on the 1861 census.
I don't have a burial for Mary .... she died in 1884 at the Maybole Combination Workhouse ... ailment was diarreah .. for 2 weeks!  Poor thing.

You haven’t said what denomination Arthur was but there don’t appear to be any Church of Scotland or RC burial records for Dalmellington for the years 1851 – 1854.  He doesn’t appear in the statutory death records for the area for 1855 – 1861, so the likely explanation is he died 1851 – 1854, and there’s no record to be found.

Hi Lorraine

I have just seen this thread.  Arthur Clark was 4xG-grandfather.  I am pretty sure he died some time between 1851 and 1854, in Girvan.  He has no death certificate in Scotland, and his wife described herself as a widow on the 1861 census, so that would be the logical conclusion.                              if you are interested in comparing notes.

Thanks

Dominic
