1)  Yes Thos (Thomas) may be a father/Brother or even Cousin.
2) A couple of years out in age is nothing unusual as Pheno has stated.

I definitely think they are your Family.

Trish :)

Couple of bits about a William Thompson(maybe yours or related) that may or may not fit in.

From Burwash: Domesday to Millennium (An excellent book for anyone with Burwash ancestors)

In 1815 24 persons calling themselves Baptists were dismissed from the chapel (Non-conformist) and formed a church at Shovers Green. The dismissal was signed on behalf of the church by William Thompson amongst others.
William Thompson a builder in the 1840's and 50's owned 3 old shops towards the West End of the high street. His widow Elizabeth sold them to Henry Dann a tea dealer.
William Thompson also owned a number of cottages including Cobblers and Wrenns, he lived with his wife Elizabeth in the former and let out the rest. By 1879 he had died and his widow sold 4 of the cottages to Henry Wrenn. She remained living in Cobblers.

There are also the following MIs at St Bartholomews that may or may not fit in.

In/affecionate remembrance of/William Thompson/who died March 31st 1855/aged 81 years/ Also of Elizabeth his wife/who died February 13th 1864/aged 72 years/
Also of Priscilla his daughter/who died March 21st 1840/aged 30 years/
Also of Frances his daughter/who died June 12th 1876/aged 59 years
The 3 first named lie on the west and the last/named on the east side of this stone
(4 lines illegible)
? be to God/who giveth us the victory/through our
Lord Jesus Christ

Here lie the remains of/William Thompson/true
servant to/The Revd Archdeacon Courtail/who set up
this stone/in testimony of/the ? fidelity and
honesty/the singular ability and diligence/with which
he continually served him/during the course of 16
years./He died Novr 5 1785/aged 5/3?1 years

Some of that may help or it may lead you to other Thompsons in Burwash that are related.

Thanks, Sean! Those definitely sound like the right person!

This is what I have so far in my Thompson investigation:

vi. Frances Thompson, born abt 1817 (before their marriage), died 15 June 1876 aged 59 (never married, had illegitimate twins in 1842 with George Noakes)

xi. Hel(l)en Charlotte Thompson, born abt. 1832, died abt. Feb 1902 (married Coppard)

Please let me know if there's anything I've missed in my notes. I recently got a subscription to Find My Past and built a rather extensive family tree which includes the Thompsons, and I'd like to make sure it's all up to scratch!

As you have got a FindmyPast sub you might want to look at RG4/2219 which details the Calvinist baptisms at Burwash, Heathfield and Mayfield if you have not done so already.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm just wondering how I'd go about doing that. I've tried all sorts, but can't find the right section to search for RG4/2219.

I haven't got FindMyPast myself unfortunately. The reference number is for the National Archives where FindMyPast got the data from. It is likely that when you do a general search for a baptism it looks through it anyway.
On Ancestry I would search through the “card catalogue” which is a list of all the different databases. Not sure if FindMyPast has anything similar.
Wouldn't worry about it too much, as I said it probably searches through it anyway.

Here is the link, managed to find it:
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/england-and-wales-non-conformist-births-and-baptisms

That will contain the Burwash Calvinist records.
