Carter/ sims Camberwell
« on: Monday 14 September 20 23:41 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find info on my partners family. Unfortunately, they know nothing of their relatives and I'm already at a dead end early on!

My partners grandfather Leonard Carter was born 1940 in Camberwell. On the record I found it mentions the mother's name was sims.

My father in law said she was called May Carter (sims before marriage) died in 1974  unsure of the exact age, but born between 1900-1910.
Her husband was Albert Carter born around 1892 died 1945.

I know they lived around Greenwich, Camberwell area. However, I cant find any records of a Albert Carter marrying a may sims?  ??? Please help guys!!!

What does Leonard’s birth cert say about his parents? Albert & May  might have been second names.
Also, address in 1940 might be on it.  Who is at that address in 1939?

Is the 1974 death for May definite?
These are the only deaths showing on a Free BMD. The 1901 one is not yours. She is single in 1939
None of the others fit your parameters.

If you say yes to 1974, and Greenwich Camberwell there is

Deaths Mar 1974   (>99%)
Carter    Florence May    2AU1902    Greenwich    5b   1201

She is in Tunbridge Wells earlier

Also

Deaths Jun 1974   (>99%)
Carter    Emma    12OC1887    Greenwich    12   1055
Carter    Gladys May    25JY1916    Greenwich    12   969
Carter    Rose May    17MY1884    Greenwich    12   962

I think you definitely need Leonard’s birth certificate

Aside from the birth of Leonard in 1940 nothing else matches the details you've given regarding an Albert and May.

If 'Albert' was known as Bert has it just been assumed it was short for Albert?  Could it have been 'Bertram'?

I've found a Bertram Carter married a Mabel Sims Dec.1915 Greenwich - this person was actually born as Bertram Persimmon Carter in June qtr.1896 Greenwich, mothers maiden name Chapman.   He married as plain Bertram, and is plain Bertram on 1939 Register (per free index) but his death is registered as Bertram P. Carter in June quarter 1945 Greenwich (which ties in with the death year you give).

Likewise, was 'May' actually Mabel?

Although married as plain Mabel Sims her full name was Mabel Phyllis Sims birth June quarter 1896 Greenwich, mmn Tatman.   She died as Mabel Phyllis Carter, born 26/3/1896, in Mar.qtr.1973 Greenwich (a year earlier than the date you gave for May).

They appear to have had per births index the following children:

Bertram F. born 1915
Dorothy V. born 1918
Douglas H. born 1921
Joyce M. born 1926
John L. born 1928
Roy G. born 1933
?Leonard born 1940 (a late/surprise baby??)

All the above births are in Greenwich and all show mmn as Sims.

So, if 'Albert' was actual Bertram and known as Bert, and 'May' was actually Mabel but known as May, this would appear to be your family - however, only Leonard's birth certificate can confirm it for sure.

Annette

Added: Just found a tree on Ancestry featuring this family and it shows your Leonard as their son but with no actual 'proof' you'll still need his birth certificate to confirm (I should also add that the tree also shows 2 others supposedly children of Bertram and Mabel but checking on births index shows these 2 were not theirs as had different mothers maiden name)

I think you may have it Annette! :D (Obviously without the Birth certificate to confirm, but the info looks good!)

Unfortunately my father in law hasn't got his father (leonard's) birth certificate! and Leonard doesn't have it either.

My FIL mentioned yesterday, he just remembers his grandparents as Bert and May (never even meeting his grandfather, and only met his grandmother a handful of times.) He thinks he had an aunt joyce/Joy and an uncle Douggie and Uncle Todd (?) which ties with Joyce and Douglas.

He never asked His father about his parents when he was younger, and now he wishes he had!

He never knew much about his Grandmother, he thinks she was born north London, but back then, what they considered North, is not what I'd consider North.

But you can order it from GRO.gov.uk using the details here

Births Jun 1940
Carter    Leonard    Sims    Greenwich   vol  1d   page 1326

unfortunately you can't buy the PDF for that era, will have to wait for snail mail.
