Susanna Murphy
« on: Tuesday 15 September 20 01:21 BST (UK) »
My great great Grandmother Susanna (or Susannah) was from Tipperary, born about 1806. She married Dennis Murphy and they had two children before moving to Yorkshire where they had more children including my great grandfather Michael Murphy.

I would love to know something of her, her maiden name, parents anything!!

Welcome to RootsChat.
You need to start in Yorkshire with the birth/baptisms of the children born there.
Early 1800s records are not always easy to find in Ireland, some parishes are better than others, so you need every clue possible from Yorkshire before searching in Ireland.

Welcome from me also  ;)

This site https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp shows mother’s maiden names in the indexes from 1837 , civil registration.

You need to register but it is free.

1839 Leeds - Dennis Murphy with mother’s name Lucass. The name is probably a variation but might help you.

You can see that the younger girls also have mother’s name Lucas.

Where do you have Susannah born in Tipperary?

I think this is the one I have seen in 1841 with Dennis but she is born Kildare.
This family are in Sheffield

1861 3487/86/58

Susannah Murphy 65 Yrs Housekeeper b Kildare
Mary Murphy 16 yrs b Leeds
Catharine Murphy 12 B Leeds

Is this your ancestor?

Dear all who have responded so quickly, Thank you. As for Tipperary, that was a mistake on my part. It seems that Kildare is correct as Susanna's birth place. I have been doing research sporadically for some years, and I guess Covid 19 gave me time to resume. I have Kildare written on an ancient  scrap of paper in my file, but the surname Lucas or Lucass is new to me and will help me further my research. I live in Australia, as my Grandfather, George Murphy, migrated here in 1912, so have never met any of my English/Irish ancestors or family members. George had a sister called Susanna, so the name went down at least three generations.

Thanks again for the leads,
Liz Field (nee Murphy)
