Help needed with the Vaughan family
« on: Tuesday 15 September 20 10:32 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Vaughan was bapt in 1817 at Pant-Teg, daughter of William and Jane. She married John Gane at Mamhilad in 1846, her father William given as a labourer. They had children William Henry 1846/7,Samuel 1848, Charles 1850, Alfred 1857 and John 1861. In 1851 they are at Trevithin, Pontypool but I cannot find them in 1861. Husband John dies in 1869 at Trevithin, Elizabeth dies in 1871 in Bristol.
Any information on birthplaces/marriage for William and Jane or census returns for them would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Thank you so much. I hadn't thought of spelling the surname as Vaughn instead of Vaughan. If you can find anything else I would appreciate it.

address on burial for Jane is Club Row, Trosnant and on that of William Trosnant.

Possible marriage 24 April 1814 in Panteague for William Vaughan, widower, and Jane Baldin, widow, both otp. Witnesses Elizabeth Vaughan, Rachel Vaughan, Phillip Vaughan, John Vaughan and Elizabeth Lewis. All marked.

Possible 1851 census, ages noted by enumerator appear to be incorrect  ::)
Trosnant, Trevethin
William Vaughan head mar 26 hallier b. Monmouthshire
Jane wife 24 b. Hereford
William Henry Gain grandson 5 b. Trevethin
Henry Parry son-in-law 25 labourer b. Usk
Mary Parry dau 29 b. Panteague
Jane Parry grand dau 2 weeks b. Trevethin
Sarah Ann Phillips visitor 9 b. Monmouth
John Parry lodger 23 brewer b. Trevethin

Parish marriage 17 Nov 1850 in Llanhilleth for Henry Parry & Mary Vaughan, father William Vaughan, labourer, one of the witnesses was John Gane.

Just checked the parish entry for Elizabeth's marriage and the entry on the previous day, Feb 8, appears to be her brother John's marriage to Mary Hollyfield.

Thank you all so much for your help. It's fantastic, but, it brings more questions, sorry! So, this is a second marriage for both William and Jane- would Baldin have been her maiden name or that of her first husband? She would have been 39 at the time of this marriage, so well into her 40's having John, Elizabeth and Mary. Would this have been likely at that time? Would there not have been other children from either first marriages?
Re the Death notice - all seems right but I have Jane's burial in Jan 1857 and the newspaper is from November 1857? What was a pew opener?
Re the marriage witnesses - why so many? Could Rachel and Phillip be William's siblings?
Any sign of them or John and Elizabeth Gane in the 1861 Census? I was hoping to find where in the counties of Monmouth/Hereford William and Jane were from.
Thanks in anticipation!

Baldin would be the surname of her first husband.

Women having chidren in their 40s is not uncommon. There may have been children from the earlier marriages, haven't spotted any Baldins as yet.
Possible baptisms in Trevethin to William & Mary Vaughan
Charles 29 May 1805
William 5 March 1807
James 7 July 1808
William 3 Feb 1810
possible burial 4 Jan 1812 for Mary Vaughan, no age, address or relative's name given.

Again, not uncommon to see 4 witnesses. It needs to be at least 2. They may be siblings, could be cousins.

Jane's burial from the parish register was on Sunday 22 November. A pew opener would have opened the pews in a church before the service. She was probably paid a small amount for this.

Elizabeth Jane was dead before the 1861 census. Address on baptism of John Gane 16 Jan 1862 has Club Row, Trosnant as the family address and I've checked the enumerator's return for Club Row and no sign of the Ganes or William Vaughan. The 1851 entry for Jane says Hereford, not Herefordshire. There was an earlier John Gane baptised Friday 23 July 1852, son of John & Elizabeth. He was buried Thursday 14 April 1854 aged 1 year 9 months. Alfred was baptised 8 Jan 1858 aged 3 weeks, address Mill Row, Trosnant.

other baptisms to George & Elizabeth Vaughan in Panteg
Mary 27 Feb 1779
George 27 April 1783 - buried 7 Feb 1784
Edward 15 June 1787

There is a William baptised in Trevethin to George & Elizabeth, but not until 17 March 1798, so unlikely unless it was an adult baptism. Also, there is a William of an age to fit this baptism married to Martha living in Panteg.

Burials in the same parish for George Vaughan 25 June 1806 & Elizabeth Vaughan 74, widow, of Rock Hill 19 May 1829.
