Brilliant, thanks very much! This should help me go back further. Do you think Jane's maiden name could be Balding or Baldwin, if there is no trace of a family called Baldin?
I think Elizabeth and John Gane were both still alive when the 1861 Census was taken - but I have not been able to find them. When he died age 46 in 1869 he was still at Trosnant.
Any more information would be great.
Many thanks

sorry, it was Jane who died before the 1861 census.

No, Baldin or similar is the name of Jane's first husband as she is a widow on her marriage to William, not her maiden name, unless she married a man with the same surname as her.

There are pieces of the 1861 census from that area that are missing.

No need to apologise, but, thank you. I keep getting confused about Jane's maiden name and first marriage surname. It's a shame 1861 Census appears to have bits missing.
I have found a marriage on 1st May 1804 of a William Vaughan to Mary Phillips at Llandenny, Monmouthshire which would tie in with the possible children Charles,James and William born 1805-1810 to a William and Mary. Can I be certain it's right though? :-\
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks

I'd looked at that marriage as well, but it's not really close to Panteg. And William Vaughan is not an uncommon name.

Yes, you are right. Maybe I'm clutching at straws. The only thing that made me question it was that there was a child, Sarah Ann Phillips, born Monmouth, listed as a visitor to William and Jane on the 1851 census. But then, Phillips is a common name, too!
Appreciate your help so far and with anything else that may come to light.
Thanks
