If you look for the war diary you need to look for the 9th. (County of London) Regt. not the (City of London).
Ancestry has listed the 19th. as the 9th. bundled with the 20th. (County of London).
The date given (1/9/16) was the date he first set foot in France.
It would have taken 2-3 days for him to arrive at his Btn.
This is where they were.

Max - Is that right?  As I understand it the gratuity was £5 for the first 12 months service then 10s per month thereafter. So 17 months service would have yielded a gratuity of £7 10s.

I've done the calculation again.  Clear result is "the month from April 1915".

The War Gratuity site reproduces AO 17 of 1919 https://www.wargratuity.uk/ao17of1919-aci-schedule/

I wonder whether the small print in paras 8 and 9 are relevant given his age?  Although the calculator doesn't take input of ages.

I'll happily query this with the owner.

Excellent guidance jim1, finally navigated that after your advice quite easily, your fillets helped me identify on 100% track too.
I would  not  have worked out Ancestry's unsignposted vagaries to the unwary ..ever. I am far from alone.
Quite an extraordinary day for me. Thank you all.

Recruitment officers were more interested in getting more bodies to the trenches than asking for proof of age. Disgraceful!

I notice in the Bde. diary the first mention of new arrivals was on the 24th.
They may have been kept back at the IBD (Infantry Base Depot, France) for additional training if some were
new recruits.
It seems by that he arrived at his Btn. HQ on the 24th. & died on the 29th.

The apparent anomaly in the war gratuity calculation is explained by the factoring in of the service gratuity.

His is a Type 1 war gratuity which is paid net of his service gratuity which in his case is the minimum sum of £2.  The calculator adds back the appropriate service gratuity sum when presenting the length of service.

See https://wargratuity.wordpress.com/2015/08/16/example-calculations-war-gratuity/ for the expert explanation.  Link on the right of the page for service gratuity if needed.

This Type 1/Type 2 distinction is something that has puzzled me - how do we know it was a Type 1 in this case? Wasn't that just for regular soldiers, usually men who had enlisted pre-war ?
