Leonard Hamblin London Reg. No. 7287
« on: Wednesday 16 September 20 09:36 BST (UK) »
Military WW1 help please, I would like to find out Leonard Hamblin,
my uncle born 1899. Information available, seems? limited to his death, medal rolls (Ancestry). Possibly service records destroyed. His signing under false age doesn’t help. Possibly my inexperience  though.

I am looking for the date he enlisted. Anything else, or experienced pointers a real bonus.

The M.O D route seems complicated to gain his death cert, where signing up date would be available.

Leonard Hamblin, born Fulham 1899 sept qtr. (GRO had unhelpful birth typo <Lionard>). Birth cert on order.

Death, France & Flanders 29 September 1916, enlisted Hammersmith. Rank Private, London Regiment, 19th  ( County of London Battalion (St Pancras)
Regimantal No. 7287
Thank you for your interest.

Looks like he was killed shortly after enlisting. 'Lambs to the Slaughter'

That was quick! Thank you..  :)
Without either his given date of birth at time or service number the MOD door seems closed.
Its always been a matter of speculation, my mother born 6 weeks before his death was under impression he signed up as young as15.

Surely he couldn't have been sent out that fast?

Registers of Soldiers' Effects of ancestry
Leonard Hamblin
War Gratuity - ought to be that figure in red ink, £5 10 -

5 pounds 10 shillings might equal 13 months service? :-\
£5 for first 12 months, then 10s. per month
(Source = Gratuity Calculation Examples)

Sorry if it is all wrong!

There is a Soldiers Will that you can get for £1.50

This is him in the Mddx. Regt.
Attesting Aug. 1916 & being posted 1/9/1916 doesn't give time for training (3 months).
Looks like he was transferred to the 19th. Btn. LR before the 10th. went to India.
So they didn't find out he was under age or he would have been discharged.

Thanks, will get on it.
Thing was all the brother's were big lads well north of 6', even without a whisker could have passed as older.
From what I can make out, with 10 brothers & sisters in the house & poor parents the matter was not, or articulately pursued.

The MoD will not have anything for him. They have only retained records of those who served after 1920.
