Burns of New Orleans Louisiana
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 05:35 BST (UK) »
I have identified John Burns in the 1895 census as a blacksmith at Freret St and Toledano. Does anyone know of any later census available on line?

All US censuses are available for free at FamilySearch and many other Louisiana records, as well.  You have to register at FamilySearch but it's free.  I'm confused, though - there was no census in 1895.

here are a few city directory listings. I stopped at 1920. It looks like they renumbered the streets about 1895 or so. I included Jeremiah in case you didn't know about him.

Could this 1880 census be linked to John & Jeremiah?

I think John Burns the blacksmith is older than that. He's listed in 1881 maybe, and definitely in 1884.
Probably a relative though, and the family next to Patrick is Andrew Byrnes. I'd scroll
through the pages and see who else turns up.

The side margin says Patrick is on Toledano between ? and ?

Here are a few from 1880 to 1890. I worked backward and wasn't looking for Patrick until you posted him, so I only have him below in 1881. Don't know if he was in the later books or not.

New Orleans City Directory

1881
John Burns, laborer, resides [blury #] Freret
Patrick Burns, carpenter, resides Toledano between Rampart? and Basin?

1884
John Burns blacksmith, r 334 1/2 Freret

1885
not as a blacksmith or on Freret

1886
John Burns, blacksmith resides 334 Freret
no Jeremiah

1887 is a business directory
he is not listed under Blacksmiths

1888
John Burns, blacksmith resides 334 1/2 Freret
no Jeremiah

1890
John Burns, blacksmith resides 334 1/2 Freret
no Jeremiah

On find a grave. Jeremiah Burns died 1916, brother John died 1924 but it is also noted that he was convicted of a crime & sent to Sing Sing 1896, shortly after his marriage to Nellie Ambrose. May explain the 1896 to 1898 gap above

Patrick's son John was a blacksmith on the 1900 and 1910 censuses, living at 2029 Toledano. Patrick's widow Catherine was at 2035.

So was John working as a blacksmith at age 10? Otherwise, I can't figure it out. There doesn't seem to be an older John Burns, blacksmith, in 1880.
