I've just checked your information on family search and it doesn't seem to be the William I am looking for as they show him in 1851 which is different to my original post.

William appears to have used the family name of his step-father George BARNARD at Stowmarket in 1841 (HO 107/1035/12 folio 26 line 13).

The births of Emily CHENERY (1846) and Laura CHENERY (1850) were registered with HOLDEN as their mother's maiden name.

A certificate uploaded to Ancestry shows that 20-year-old labourer William CHENERY, who married Sarah HOLDEN at Stowmarket on 12 Oct. 1845, was the son of a coal porter named Martin CHENERY.

Widower Martin CHINERY married Elizabeth BUXTON at Stowmarket in 1819 and had several children christened there (Suffolk FHS indexes):

1820 Susanna CHENERY
1821 John CHENERY
1823 Benjamin CHINNERY
1824 John CHENERY
1826 William CHENERY
1828 Sarah Ann CHENERY

The elder BARNARD children in the 1841 census have similar forenames and seniority, although the only John with them is 7 years old.

The SFHS has also transcribed the burial of Martin CHENERY at Stowmarket in 1828, aged 60, and the marriage of widow Elizabeth CHENERY with George Sougate BARNARD at Stowmarket in 1832.
