HARTLEY, AMELIA  COWEN  GRO Reference: 1851  D Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 20  Page 885
But No Mothers Maiden name recorded

There is a marriage in 1859 in Sheffield of an Elizabeth Hartley age 30 spinster to Joseph Hobson, father named as Thomas Hartley so did she perhaps never marry Henry?

and a baptism of a Frances Hartley 1849 mother Elizabeth spinster

That looks very interesting but not sure at this point where the Cohen comes in

Amelias wedding certificate from September 25th 1867 has her age stated as 17 her name given as Amelia Hartley Cohen and her father as Henry Hartley Cohen ( tobacconist).

I think that the Cohen comes in as the probable surname of the father of the (illegitimate) children of Elizabeth Hartley

Here is how I am seeing this after looking at all of the info

Henry Cohen and Elizabeth Hartley were together but never married for whatever reason, possibly a religious issue??

Kids I can see are

Frances 1849
Amelia 1851
Lonwen 1853

Henry Cohen died Sheffield 1856

Elizabeth married Joseph Hobson 1859

In the 1861 census we have

Elizabeth Hobson with her children all listed as Cohen

It fits now just to look for a few more gems

Henry Cohens death record has him living at South Street (1856)
1861 census has Elizabeth Hobson with Cohen children at South Street

The Henry Cohen that died in Sheffield in 1856 was age 50 according to GRO.  There was an infant Henry who died the same year

So that could have been or most likely father and son died. If this is the correct Henry Cohen he was a fair bit older then Elizabeth ( 22 years)
