Maison Dieu, Brechin
« on: Sunday 20 September 20 00:35 BST (UK) »
18 Aug 1832 my 3 x gt grandfather Joseph Archibald, a blacksmith of Maisondieu, married....at Brechin.
All I can find of this place is the hospital/chapel :
"The Maison Dieu hospital was founded in the 1260s to serve Brechin’s poor. It seems to have still been in use in the 1700s. But by the 1800s the chapel had been partially demolished and was in use as a stable."
I wonder if anyone could tell me whether this could have been an area of Brechin or could he have had a blacksmith's shop within the stables perhaps.
Also he was born in a place called Greenolar??  Farnell. I cannot find this place either. I have attached a copy of the baptism. Perhaps someone could decipher the name better than me. I am not familiar with the area at all.

Likely Messandue which appears to be a farm.

Here is an 1825 map all Parishes are clearly marked.

Montrose is on the coast turn left with your mouse and you will see Brechin.

Maisondieu is a farm on the outskirts of Brechin. See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=56.74363&lon=-2.68172&layers=5&b=1 and zoom in till you can see it and https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO5861. The tenant farmer there in the 1830s was my second cousin five times removed, Alexander Guthrie, whose father James farmed there before him, in the 1790s. There were 7 households at Maisondieu in the 1841 census.

Perhaps your Joseph was the son of an employee at Maisondieu, or perhaps he was himself employed on the farm at the time of his marriage?

I wonder if Greenolar could be a weird spelling of Greenlaw, which is in the parish of Farnell a mile or two south of Brechin beside the road to Arbroath? Your extract is too small for me to be able to decipher it, I'm afraid. See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=56.69406&lon=-2.63905&layers=5&b=1 (zoom in) and https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO6155.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you so much both of you. I had found Greenlaw farm just now from the map  DonM posted -  Farnell on that map was Fernell in those days.
Maisondieu at last! Thank you Forfarian. Joseph was a blacksmith on his marriage in 1832 so was probably at the little Smithy just to the south west of Maisondieu. Unfortunately he died before 1838 and his wife remarried. They were living in Nether Tenements by 1841 which is where his wife lived at her first marriage. How interesting that your cousin lived there too at the same time. They certainly would have known each other.:) It is also good to see that both of these farms and the shape of the fields etc are still as they were, looking at the side by side views.
