POW Cards at The National Archives
« on: Monday 21 September 20 18:25 BST (UK) »
I've been given a list of 19 names of men in The Leicestershire Regiment who were (according to the list) held at Stalag 344, having been captured in Norway in 1940.

The list is in alphabetical order of surname.

I've searched the records section of the National Archives website and have found the first ten named just by using their service number, but not the other nine (searching on both/either their surname* or service number).

Does anyone know why some POWs have cards and some don't, please?

Thanks
STG

* most of the ones I can't find have "common" surnames (e.g. Taylor, Wood), the most unusual is F.Waltho 4859387 if anyone wants to see if they can find what I can't  ;D

Yes.  This is because the project to index the cards is not yet complete.  It is an ongoing project in alphabetic order.  The last time I looked they had reached letter "M".  See National Archive records set     WO 416   for information.

Well, as it happens the first one I can't find has a surname beginning with N, so that makes sense.

I'll just have to wait it out, won't I?

Thank you for the info.
