No certificate GRO
« on: Tuesday 22 September 20 13:20 BST (UK) »
I applied for a marriage certificate from Shoreditch 1872 and after 2 weeks have had an email from the GRO saying sorry they have refunded me as they cant provide the certificate and I should approach the local register office directly, has anyone encountered this before?

I would be quite happy with that being a marriage entry,  it is likely to have copies of original signatures on it coming from the register office.  ;D

Many London register offices will no longer carry out searches or issue certificates for historical events. They will simply refer you to the GRO.

Some will do it but will charge for searching their own indexes, which are different from the GRO’s.

In this case it would be advisable to ring Hackney Register Office, carefully explain the situation, and ask what they can do to help you. The contact number is on the link provided by rosie99 above.

Are you quite certain that the marriage record is not available online? If you post the details we may be able to help you check all available places.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
