Understanding abbreviations related to Rank in old Navy records from WWII.

Hi doing some research on my decesed grandfather. I knew he was in the Air branch of the navy during world war one. stugging to make sense of some of the abriviations and would greatly appreciate some help with a few.

in 1942 the reserves list he is listed as?
          Rank - S L (A). Seneority : 18.11.41  Division: RAN


Could someone clarify meaning of RAN and S L ?


in 1942 in
 he's listed as a tempy sub lieut (A) (O)

in 44 he's listed as
    tempy sub lieut (A) (P)


In these contexts is the O and P short for officer and private?

I'm aware these might all be very stupid questions but am very new to looking at military records.
I know (A) refers to the air branch but not 100% sure of others particularly  "S L" in this combination.   Thanks in advance.

Sub Lieutenant makes a lot of sense, Haha don't know how I couldn't see it before. Thanks.

Given he was British I find RAN really odd to be by his name, if it is Royal Australian Navy. Is there anything else it might be?

In the early years of WW2 the Royal Australian Navy was helping us out in Europe. Perhaps he was seconded to one of their ships.

RAN ... the digitised service records for WWII RAN personnel  may well be readily available online, no charge, at Australia's National Archives of Australia website, naa.gov.au "record search"
